The Story Behind “The Fall of the Velvet Hammer”
From 2015 to 2016, Mac Hoffmann served as a staff attorney in the Illinois Capitol under House Speaker Mike Madigan, the most powerful figure in Illinois politics for decades. In 2025, Madigan was sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison on corruption charges.
The Fall of the Velvet Hammer is Mac’s first release as a songwriter. It’s not a takedown. It’s a reckoning. A quiet elegy for a machine built on silence, survival, and power passed hand to hand like a relic.
He waited until he had something worth saying.
